Positive self-talk can be a powerful tool in boosting your confidence and achieving your goals. In this article, we will explore the benefits of Positive Self-Talk and how it can impact your mindset and overall growth.
We’ve all read about Imposter Syndrome/Phenomenon. However, other models speak to how we judge ourselves. The theme that emerges from these is simply this: Negative Self Talk.
Understanding the Negative Impacts of Self-Talk
How we perceive ourselves is a complex issue. So much of it is situational, but the feelings coming from these events run a wide spectrum from “I’m such a jerk,” I’m really over my head,” to “I wish I had never said that.” What links these situations is some version of change or transition ahead of us.
While there are many paths to take, the question is, how do you choose what’s right for you?
Here are six suggestions for implementing positive self-talk:
- Understand that you’re not the first person to face that challenge. What happens often is that we tend to repeat what we know when we want to do or say something else.
- Replay what you told yourself initially and rewrite that “script.” We can always have a “do-over” and be ready for the next time this type of self-talk appears because it will. Use positive self-talk to encourage yourself.
- Turn on your curious button—how excited does this change or transition make you feel? Can it be an adventure? Take the road less traveled, which per Robert Frost, made all the difference.
- Is this situation an opportunity or a challenge? What is your mindset telling you? If you start with the outcome in mind, you may have a good beginning for self-discovery. Use positive self-talk to remind yourself of your strengths and abilities.
- Be in learning mode—my suggestion to many clients is to overcome the status quo. Ask yourself if you prefer staying in survival mode or if you would want to seize success mode. Use positive self-talk to motivate yourself to learn and grow.
- Lastly, remind yourself that it is okay to fail. Change only happens by facing a fear preventing you from trying. Use positive self-talk to be kind to yourself and recognize that failure is a natural part of the learning process.

The Importance of Positive Self-Talk in Achieving Success
In conclusion, negative self-talk can harm our confidence and hinder our ability to achieve our goals. However, by recognizing and addressing our negative self-talk and replacing it with positive self-talk, we can rewrite our internal scripts and create a more positive outlook on ourselves and our abilities. By implementing the six suggestions we’ve discussed, we can shift our mindset from fear and self-doubt to curiosity and growth.
So next time you hear your inner self-talk, remember to be kind to yourself, embrace change, and seize the opportunities that come your way with the power of positive self-talk. You got this!
